Barnsdall, Oklahoma: A Town Rooted in Oil
Nestled in Osage County, Oklahoma, the town of Barnsdall boasts a population of around 1,000 residents. Its story begins in the early 1900s with the discovery of oil. E.W. Marland, a prominent oilman, established the town in 1905. originally naming it Bigheart. However, in 1922. It was renamed Barnsdall after Theodore Barnsdall. Another key figure in the Marland Oil Company.
The town thrived during the oil boom, becoming a center for oil production and refining. However, the industry’s cyclical nature saw a decline in the later years. Despite this Barnsdall perseveres, retaining its small-town charm and rich history. Visitors can explore the Osage Nation Museum. Which sheds light on the area’s indigenous heritage. Or delve into the Barnsdall Historical Society Museum to learn about the town’s oil boom days.

Barnsdall, Oklahoma made national news in 2023 after a devastating tornado ripped through the town. Founded by oil heiress Aline Barnsdall the park boasts a rich history and a stunning collection of architectural gems.
The crown jewel of the park is undoubtedly Hollyhock House. A masterpiece designed by legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright. This iconic structure built in the Mayan Revival style. Is a testament to Wright’s vision and architectural prowess. Visitors can take guided tours and immerse themselves in the house’s unique design elements.
Beyond Hollyhock House the park offers a vibrant theater scene. The Barnsdall Gallery Theatre (BGT) presents a diverse range of productions. from live performances and dance recitals to film screenings and lectures. Local food trucks, live music by DJs and the option to purchase limited-edition tours of Hollyhock House further elevate the experience.
