Marland, a prominent oilman, established the town in 1905. originally naming it Bigheart. However, in 1922. It was renamed Barnsdall after Theodore Barnsdall. Another key figure in the Marland Oil Company.
The town thrived during the oil boom, becoming a center for oil production and refining. However, the industry’s cyclical nature saw a decline in the later years.
