Technologies have always been vital in war even before the invention of modern tanks, airplanes, and missiles. The ancient civilizations were always trying to develop better means to protect their cities, launch attacks against their rivals, and get an upper hand in war. These included new weapons, improved armour, improved defences, communication tools, and machines that could generate power. While some of these technologies where very popular others became forgotten with time. Through siege engines, better metallurgy, naval innovation, and mechanical weapons, smaller armies were able to pose a challenge to bigger armies. In addition, through such technologies, wars became less about physical prowess. Engineering and craftsmanship became critical in war as governments spent lots of money developing technologies that would enable them penetrate the enemy’s defence or facilitate movement of troops. The evolution of military technologies is still ongoing in today’s world, and today’s military technologies include a number of embedded systems performing essential tasks including communication, navigation, reconnaissance, weaponry management, and electronic warfare. As reported by Consegic Business Intelligence, “the Military Embedded Systems Market is expected to grow from USD 2.05 billion in 2024 to exceed USD 3.84 billion by 2032.”

The Rise of Siege Engines and Mechanical Warfare

Among the key technological advancements that were made in ancient times, perhaps the one that had a profound impact on warfare was the development of siege engines. The use of powerful walls for the defence of cities and fortresses meant that attacking armies needed devices that would help them in penetrating the walls. For instance, battering rams were some of the simple but efficient tools developed that consisted of massive wooden beams used for hitting walls or gates. To launch stones or other missiles over a great distance, sophisticated tools such as catapults and ballistae were also employed. Such technological advancements in siege were utilized efficiently by the Romans and Greeks. The development of siege towers enabled attacking forces to gain height advantage over defending armies. Siege engines impacted ancient armies in that they had to have engineers and builders besides having other specialized forces.

The Ancient Inventions That Gave Armies an Advantage

Apart from these known weapons, there have been many technological advancements made during that time period which contributed to enhancing the strength of ancient armies. For instance, the advancement in metal work provided blacksmiths with the ability to make more durable swords, spears, shields, and armor. The use of stronger material for making weapons, like iron, was an advantage for some civilizations compared to those who used less durable material for weaponry. The chariots were among other innovations which were influential since it provided transport, speed, and power. The good utilization of the technology of chariots would enable skilled soldiers to move fast across battle fields and attack the enemy formations. Similarly, naval technology played a vital role in helping civilizations like Athens and Romans control the waterways. Even a small technology such as better saddle, stirrups in later times, and military roads enhanced mobility of an army.

How Forgotten Military Technologies Changed Battle Strategies

The impact of military technology on warfare was not limited to making weapons stronger but included changing strategies for winning battles that commanders adopted. In cases where the effectiveness of projectile weapons increased, armies would be able to fight enemies from further away instead of starting a battle at close quarters. The development of fortifications led to the adoption of siege tactics by attackers, whereas defenders would devise ways of defending walls and supply lines. Just like naval technologies, these made it possible for commanders to control strategic rivers, coastlines, and trade routes. Some technologies also promoted restructuring of armies and the creation of specific forces. Engineers, archers, cavalry, experts in siege work, seamen, all had their special contribution to make in battle. So commanders had to consider terrain, logistics, timing and available technologies, as well as the number of troops. Some technologies became obsolete or were superseded by others, and often their know-how was lost. Their impact, however, was evident in the strategies of later civilizations.

The Legacy of Ancient Warfare Technology in Modern Engineering

The war technologies, developed by the ancient civilizations, were of great importance in the determination of the development of engineering and military technologies. Ancient engineers needed to know the physics of forces, materials, stability, geometry, and mechanics to be able to construct siege engines, fortifications, bridges, and ships. While the weaponry has become much more advanced over the years, there are still some engineering concepts that can be useful. For instance, research into ancient fortifications teaches us about construction techniques and defence structures, while siege machines showcase one of the early instances of mechanical advantage and projectile motion use. Ancient roads and logistics system of armies are another example of how important transport infrastructure was for the success of an army at that time. Through reconstruction of ancient technologies, archaeologists and historians learn about technologies that are no longer known today. These findings prove once again that ancient societies knew much more about technology than people think nowadays.

    Conclusion

Technological advances influenced ancient warfare through the combination of courage and strength of warriors. The development of new technology enabled troops to perform attacks and to protect themselves in different ways. For example, the emergence of siege engines, ships, weapon upgrades, fortifications and transportation technologies opened up many possibilities for warriors in their actions. Many inventions from the past have not remained relevant nowadays and some of them have been replaced by something better; however, there is still something that could be seen in modern times and which reflects how ancient peoples were able to find solutions to the complex issues.
