A magnitude 5.2 earthquake rattled Southern California on Tuesday night, with its epicenter located approximately 18 miles southwest of Bakersfield. The tremor was initially recorded as a 5.3 magnitude event, striking at 9:09 p.m as per the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). This seismic event was followed by a series of at least a dozen aftershocks, Including notable magnitudes of 4.5 and 4.1.

The earthquake’s epicenter was positioned roughly 14 miles northwest of Grapevine. An unincorporated area, 60 miles northwest of Santa Clarita, and about 88 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. The tremors were felt over a broad region stretching across the Los Angeles Basin, the inland valleys and as far as Santa Maria. Bakersfield, and Fresno.

There were no immediate reports of damage following the quake. However, the Los Angeles Fire Department conducted a routine survey to assess any potential impact, as announced by Mayor Karen Bass’ office via social media. The USGS reported that the seismic activity was perceptible across various locations, including Lamont, Arvin, Rosedale, and Oildale.

In the past ten days, there have been no significant earthquakes, defined as those with a magnitude of 3.0 or greater, centered near the recent event. Statistically, California and Nevada experience an average of five earthquakes per year in the 5.0 to 6.0 magnitude range, according to a recent three-year data sample. The earthquake struck at a depth of 5.6 miles.
